I have led family art workshops, run animation courses and assisted on art courses for children aged 5 - 11 at Camden Arts Centre. I regularly work with young people (13 - 25) on art and film projects through an organisation called Gendered Intelligence. Last year I worked with a group of 13 - 18 year old trans people to create a web comic called The Transvengers which was displayed in the Wellcome Collection's exhibition The Institute of Sexology and seen by about quarter of a million people.
Whether for comics, animations or short films, I am particularly good at developing narratives with groups of people. I've formulated a method which has worked successfully with groups from 5 years old to adults. We've not only produced some really creative work but each group member has felt that their ideas have been valued and that they have a stake in the finished piece.
I worked as visual documenter on a brilliant life drawing project where trans, gender variant and intersex people drew trans, gender variant and intersex models.
You can read more about the Transvengers and how we made it on the Wellcome Collection's blog.
"A Wizard came to our Spring Party" was made by 5 - 7 year olds during the four day (4 x 2.5 hours) Easter holiday animation course that I ran at Camden Arts Centre.
"The Sword in the Stone" was made by 8 - 11 year olds during the four day (4x 2.5 hours) Easter holiday animation course that I ran at Camden Arts Centre.
This Parade of Puppets grew week by week as more puppets were made during the Family Make and Do sessions that I led over 10 weeks at Camden Arts Centre.
As part of the i:trans project which Gendered Intelligence ran in collaboration with the Science Museum, a group of young people imagined scientific developments around gender identity that may be with us in the year 2100. We produced this collaborative animation from their drawings and ideas.
The youth group has also made a short satirical film called "Young, Sex Changed and Lonely" which is currently doing the rounds of the festival circuit!
